Recruiting MDs by lifestyle

Lifestyle & Leisure Published on 26 October 2007 in Lifestyle & Leisure

Medical recruiting agencies, like many others, typically focus on the nuts and bolts of the job when attempting to match up doctors and positions. Missing from that model, however, are many of the factors that can have just as big an effect on the success of the match—lifestyle factors like the surrounding culture, the availability of family-oriented services and activities, and the types of sports and recreation on hand nearby, all of which contribute to a doctor's ultimate happiness with the position. MedRecruit aims to pick up where other recruiting efforts leave off by explicitly including lifestyle in the process of matching doctors with positions.

Doctors who sign up for the free service, which currently serves just New Zealand and Australia, specify not just the details of their medical specialty and grade; they also tell MedRecruit what type of location they want and what sorts of family, cultural and recreational opportunities—skiing or surfing, for example. MedRecruit then helps find a good match among the hospitals and medical organizations it represents. Watchlists are available, as is 24-hour assistance, and MedRecruit facilitates all travel and accommodations. It even pays a 4 percent bonus to doctors who work exclusively through MedRecruit. Ultimately, the company says, the result is happier doctors and higher retention rates for the hospitals that hire them.

With thousands of jobs available at hundreds of hospitals across New Zealand and Australia, MedRecruit was founded last year by Sam Hazledine, a doctor and skiing champion who wanted to create better balance between doctors' work and personal lives. The same principle could well be applied to virtually every other profession, too. As everyone knows, happier employees translate into better performance all around—who's going to argue with that? Comments on this idea:

This guy is an absolute dickhead, laughing stock of NZ, work for him at your peril.

Having worked through MedRecruit 'at my peril' I have found the service excellent. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

I've talked to a number of doctors who have used MedRecruit and everyone only seems to have great things to say about the organisation.

My partner and I have worked with Medrecuit and Sam for almost 2years now and have nothing but great things to say about Sam and his fantastic team. He provides a great service that has delivered everything we have wanted and more. More than this, we have personally met with Sam on several occasions, both professionally and socially, and he his a great guy. Work elsewhere 'at your peril'.

I have had the pleasure of getting my employment through medrecruit for over a year. They have always had my best interests at hand, ensuring I got the best job,and best pay.Ensuring I got what I wanted and not what they wanted. They also ensured I was looked after, and always had my back if things were going wrong at a job. They are definately a company you can trust. Sam himself is an outstanding employer, but an even better guy. Always making sure things were good with work and going beyond what any other employer would do to ensure you got the right job in the right location. Always at hand to offer advise and a very easy going guy to enjoy a beer or two with.
It definately is a case of an opportunity lost if you go elsewhere

I met Sam when I worked with MedRecruit for a year ('07 -'08). The previous few comments have said it all.

Despite no longer working for Sam he still meets me when I come down to Queenstown, is willing to lend me his company car, and has agreed to be part of my Peak to Peak Challenge team next year. Does that sound like the type of guy who deserves the first comment?

Medrecruit is (in my and many other Doctors view)the best medical recruitment company in Australasia as evidenced by extremely happy Drs who have all been delivered an outstanding career and lifestyle specifically tailored to them. Sam is the driving force and sets the tone for this fantastic service. He does an amazing job. Personally I have known him for over 12 years and is a also a great guy. Keep up the good work Sam and the team as Medrecruit!

Thanks for all the incredible support to everyone who has left it.

Sarah, I'd love to hear from you personally to see why you were offended because my vision is to serve doctors and any way we can do that better I want to know about it!

If you were just having a bad day that's cool too!!!
