A solar energy system provides clean power while improving air quality
Spotted: Today, buildings are responsible for 39 per cent of global energy-related carbon emissions. Green roofs and solar panels are two tools that are used to improve a building’s carbon footprint and environmental impact. Previously, a choice had to be made between fitting a building with one or the other, but Over Easy’s new system allows both to function simultaneously.
Conventional solar energy system designs create a microclimate that is not suitable for plants to grow underneath. However, because the Norwegian startup’s system uses double-sided solar panels that are mounted vertically rather than horizontally, light and water can reach the rooftop, meaning plant life can thrive below the solar installations. At the same time, because solar panels are less efficient in warmer temperatures, the cooling effect of the greenery boosts power generation. The vertical pre-assembled photovoltaic units are lightweight and can be installed on flat roofs or retrofitted onto an existing green roof without perforating roofing membranes or the structure.
In 2023, Over Easy commenced manufacturing the product and received the necessary certifications through rigorous testing including the wind tunnel certification that confirms the system’s ability to withstand extreme weather conditions. The technology is patent pending and currently being demonstrated throughout Europe in prototype and pilot.
The company continues to develop ways to improve the product and reduce its carbon footprint, such as by exploring if the solar panels can be made with specially sourced low-carbon wafers and solar cells. OverEasy is also optimising material usage to reduce waste and exploring local manufacturing options to reduce transport distances.
