This tool helps companies measure, report, and act on nature risks
Spotted: Over the last decade, companies have taken strides in climate action and reporting, particularly in terms of emissions. But carbon is only one part of the climate puzzle, with nature and biodiversity often overlooked or poorly understood when it comes to business decisions and corporate reporting. A lot of this has to do with organisations not knowing where to start – but now Natcap hopes to help.
Founded by Baroness Kathy Willis in 2018, while she was serving in the UK Government’s Natural Capital Committee, Natcap supports companies in measuring, reporting, and acting on nature-based impacts and risks. Typically, this level of insight would need to be provided by a specialist consultant, often at great expense. Natcap, however, has developed a single, trusted platform that integrates the world’s best nature datasets and uses this granular data to provide essential, macro-level insights.
This allows companies to measure and report according to key frameworks, including the EU’s compulsory Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), and the Sustainable Finance Disclosures Regulation (SFDR). Using the platform and Natcap’s team of advisors, companies can also transform their decision-making, quantifying risks like coastal deforestation and identifying nature-related business or investment opportunities to help future-proof their organisation.
With the tool, Natcap customers can easily identify any high-risk areas within a business, whether that’s part of its direct operations or a wider supply chain, including region- or commodity-specific concerns. This means businesses can be proactive when it comes to risk response, like finding another supply source. But as Natcap CEO Sebastian Leape explained to Springwise, “We don’t just provide a snapshot: our platform gives our customers the tools and knowledge to do it themselves going forward.”
In terms of next steps for Natcap, the company is looking to invest more in its science and engineering team, with an initial focus on improving its risk assessment capabilities. And, to help expand its customer base, Natcap plans to invest in marketing to boost brand awareness and grow its partnerships with leading consultancies. Overall, Leape told Springwise the company will also be “looking to help integrate nature into the broader climate conversation happening in corporates today, helping them navigate their sustainability journey with ease and confidence.”
