A comfortable, sustainable alternative to the underwired bra

A lingerie company is using innovative technology to make bras more comfortable and their manufacturing more sustainable

Spotted: Although the myths about underwire bras causing cancer have been dispelled, there are a lot of other reasons why poorly-fitting bras can be bad for you – including increased neck and back pain and headaches. Also, they can be just plain uncomfortable. Startup Soft Revolt aims to offer a more comfortable and sustainable alternative, with their 3D-knitted bras. 

Soft Revolts bras are designed to help women with larger cup sizes, by creating a supportive bra without underwires. Their bras are 3D-knitted in one piece, before adding lingerie straps, hooks and eyes. While a standard bra has around 50 pieces, the Soft Revolt version has just eight. And the 3D knitting process allows the company to reduce CO2 emissions during production by around 90 per cent, in comparison to traditional methods. 

The 3D-moulding and knitting process allows the bras to be crafted as an “all-in-one shape,” leading to a more supportive product. The company also develop special yarns to aid in the knitting process. Their first products—bralettes in a range of sizes—are currently available for pre-order. 

Soft Revolt claims that its goal is to develop a more circular process for the lingerie industry – as well as a softer and more comfortable product for women. The company told Springwise that they are, “there for the women who dare to choose for themselves and care about the impact on nature. Our products should therefore not only emphasise femininity with optimal comfort but at the same time be gentle on the world around us.  Only then can we start our soft revolution.” 

From recycled materials to low-carbon manufacturing, there is a huge shift taking place in the world of fashion, towards more sustainable models.
