Face masks reduce lens fog for those wearing glasses

Wires Glasses and designer Vivienne Westwood have developed stylish masks that can be worn comfortable with glasses

Spotted: Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve had to incorporate wearing face masks into our daily lives. However, the visually-impaired amongst us have discovered that wearing a mask and your glasses at the same time results in instant fogging. As a solution, London-based company Wires Glasses have partnered with Vivienne Westwood to develop a more comfortable experience. With lens fogging in mind, the collaboration focused on functionality, aesthetic and principles, creating chic masks that hang from the wearer’s glasses instead of their ears.

The mask designs are stylish and comfortable, crafted from off-cut fabric from Vivienne Westwood, with Wires Glasses frames made from stainless steel wire and 3D-printed lenses. The combination of the off-cut fabric, which would normally be discarded, and the 3D-printing ensures the process produces zero waste. After carefully considering every detail, the company focused on using organic cotton for the material’s small ecological footprint and its filtration efficiency. During manufacturing, Wire Glasses looked to support those that were out of work due to the pandemic and hired tailors who normally work in the theatre industry to create the masks.

The masks are available to purchase on the Wires Glasses website and all proceeds will go to the chosen charities, Cool Earth, Women’s Aid and The Black Curriculum.
