These advanced algorithms are helping to extend battery lifespans, cut costs, and reduce waste

Spotted: As the world accelerates its transition to electric mobility, the looming challenge of managing 100 million end-of-life EV batteries over the next decade or so cannot be ignored. Representing 40 per cent of a vehicle’s cost and generating up to 10 tonnes of CO2 emissions per battery, these power sources are a critical ecological and economic issue. Enter a Paris-based startup that’s leveraging technology to extend battery life, enable reuse, and minimise waste.

Founded in 2021, Bib Batteries provides a holistic platform to monitor battery health in real time, without the need for additional hardware. Using data from vehicle telematics and charging systems, the algorithm accurately calculates a battery’s state of health (SoH). This information helps ensure that batteries are fully utilised during their first life and seamlessly transitioned to second-life applications such as renewable energy storage or lighter mobility solutions.

This innovation has the potential to make the circular economy of batteries both scalable and accessible. By offering transparent SoH data, it addresses a key barrier in the second-hand EV market, where a lack of trust in battery health has hindered growth. Additionally, the company partners with European firms to secure the best pathways for repair, reuse, or recycling, cutting both emissions and costs. CEO Pierre-Amans Lapeyre explained: “we aim to reduce costs for both manufacturers and buyers: The lifespan of a battery is a critical factor. The good news is that, based on our calculations, batteries age well and retain on average 80 per cent SoH at the end of their first life.”

Currently, the startup has tracked over 40,000 batteries, preventing 2,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. With €2.2 million in seed funding secured in September 2024, the company aims to scale its solution across Europe. As Lapeyre notes, the ambition is to “continue advancing the circularity of the battery value chain, making it not only environmentally sustainable but also profitable for all stakeholders.”
