Powdered soaps that tackle single-use plastic pollution

This refillable solution helps customers cut down on their packaging waste

Spotted: About 179 million plastic bottles of shampoo, body wash, and other personal care products are thrown away every year in Australia alone. As well as generating masses of plastic waste, transporting these kinds of dense, liquid-based products is also emissions-intensive. This is where Baresop comes in. 

The Aussie company has created a system of refillable, plant-based body and hand washes, which are delivered in powdered form to make their delivery easier and more sustainable. Founded by Prisca Ongonga-Daehn, Baresop also partners with Charity Water, a non-profit organisation that provides clean drinking water to communities in the developing world.  

Once customers have bought their first premium Baresop bottle, which is made from recycled and recyclable plastic, they can create their own soaps at home by mixing the powdered formula with warm water and swirling the bottle. After they run out, customers reorder the powdered soap formula, which is packaged in a small, home-compostable sachet. 

Last year, Baresop secured deals with health foods chain Go Vita, distributor Alita Sales, and Blooms The Chemist, but its bottles and refills are also available to buy directly on the company website.
