Reusable gear that protects health workers

A medical supply company is replacing disposable products with green alternatives

Spotted: There are over 59 million healthcare professionals working around the world, who all require a continuous supply of single-use personal protective equipment (PPE). Because this equipment can get contaminated with harmful bacteria and substances, it isn’t reused and much of it gets sent to landfill. AmorSui wants to change this.

Traditional, disposable PPE products are made from non-recyclable materials that can take hundreds of years to decompose. By contrast, AmorSui is creating products – including lab coats, isolation gowns, and a fire-resistant line – that are all made from longer-lasting, machine-washable fabrics.

One isolation gown can be washed up to 100 times while retaining its protective properties, which means it can stop 100 disposable gowns from being thrown into landfill. Once it’s reached the end of its life, the gown is fully recyclable. And because users avoid the costs associated with frequent waste disposal, according to AmorSui its solution is 22 per cent cheaper overall.

AmorSui also prioritises making equipment that fits well, as the company founder and PhD chemist Beau Wangtrakuldee once suffered chemical burns while wearing a lab coat that was too big. Because of this, AmorSui produces both women’s and men’s lab coats to ensure users are fully protected.

At the beginning of August 2024, AmorSui closed a $3.5 million seed funding round and the money is being used to support product development and help the company expand its market presence. AmorSui also plans to develop an AI-powered marketplace of net-zero medical supplied.
