This startup cleans and returns restaurant and cold chain food packaging for reuse
Spotted: More than 40 per cent of plastic is only used once and then thrown away. And the reality is that even those who want to recycle their plastic have a hard time. This is because not every recycling centre accepts all types of plastic – especially when it comes to food packaging.
US company Dispatch Goods was started to change this. Serving as a circular logistics service, the company works with customers like DoorDash, Imperfect Foods, and individual restaurants. The company collects plastic containers, freezer packs, and takeaway food packaging, which are then taken back to the company’s facilities to be cleaned, sanitised, and sold back for reuse. Essentially, Dispatch acts as a laundry service for reusable food packaging.
In addition, restaurant or food delivery customers can text a number on the containers to schedule at-home collection from Dispatch Goods or deposit their containers in a return bin. Importantly, Dispatch’s solution allows brands to continue using their existing packaging, without needing to adjust their existing systems.
One key selling point for businesses is that Dispatch can tailor its service to suit each customer. The company has custom operating procedures for every brand it works with to ensure that any packaging sent back is usable. Dispatch can also work with brands to help them switch to more durable packaging.
