How do these grapevine-based containers keep produce fresh for longer?
Spotted: Packaging is undergoing a transformation as innovative new materials replace single-use plastics. From purpose-grown ingredients such as giant kelp and milk protein to biowaste materials such as spent coffee grounds, packaging is increasingly available in biodegradable and compostable formats.
Now, Chilean biotechnology company Relier is bringing a powerful combination of nanotechnology and AI to the packaging industry. The startup uses vineyard agricultural waste for its fully compostable, biodegradable produce containers, and optimises its recipes using deep learning algorithms. By working with local growers, Relier helps them turn waste into a new income stream.
The eco-friendly alternative packaging is suitable for a variety of fruits and vegetables and is strong enough to withstand the export process. COO Sebastián Molina told Springwise, “Our biomaterial not only replaces PET plastic but also incorporates polyphenols extracted from vine shoots, providing natural antimicrobial properties that prolong fruit shelf life.”
For growers seeking a transition away from chemical pesticides, Relier also uses artificial intelligence to design biostimulants tailored specifically for different types of fruit trees. That customisation helps maximise plant health while also discouraging pests by enhancing tree resistance to various diseases.
The company’s development plans include scaling production and expanding the number of available products, particularly for protecting and enhancing crops through additional types of biostimulants.
Other innovations that are improving crop and soil health through more sustainable ingredients include biodegradable crop inputs and a fertiliser made from waste cellulose.
