The cleaning products are organic and compostable
Spotted: Increased awareness of the health benefits of coconut products is driving global market growth in plant-based cosmetics, food, and drink products. The rest of the plant is also proving to be extremely useful as innovators use the shells, fibres, and leaves for a multitude of new, biodegradable, sustainable products.
As a replacement for microplastic-shedding household tools such as brooms, scouring pads, and carpet brushes, EcoCoco Kenya’s line of compostable, organic cleaning products help prevent thousands of extra pieces of waste from entering the Earth’s waterways every day. The company uses the durable, strong fibres from the outside of the coconut shell for its scrubbers and brushes.
EcoCoco Kenya’s scrubbers are available with or without a handle, and all pieces are completely plastic-free. The coconut doughnut scrubber is strong enough to replace steel wool and plastic pot scrubbers, and all products can be used on non-stick pans without scratching the surface.
Coconut fibres are naturally anti-bacterial and flexible, making them ideal for cleaning the surface of fruits and vegetables without bruising or scratching the flesh. As well as preventing microplastic pollution, using EcoCoco Kenya’s products helps reduce general landfill waste and carbon emissions – and no petroleum is required for production either. Once an item is beyond repair, it can be composted, rather than thrown away.
Other innovations from Springwise’s archive that feature coconuts being used to reduce waste include solar lamps made from coconut bark and vegan leather made from discarded coconut water.
