The bottle will decompose into biomass under ambient conditions within 14 weeks, and each refill packet can be added to the food waste or compost bin
Spotted: UK home and personal care product startup, Spruce, has launched a collection of bottled cleaning products that can be purchased once and continue to be reused, with their compostable refill sachets.
The startup, which has been shortlisted for sustainable design of the year at Dezeen Awards 2020, offers a more sustainable way of repurchasing its multi-purpose cleaning or bathroom spray.
The first purchase set comes with what Spruce calls an eternity bottle made of pastel-coloured aluminium and a trigger spray pump. To refill the bottle, the sachet contents are sprinkled into the bottle and mixed with tap water to create 500 millilitres of cleaning liquid.
For the compostable refill packs, Spruce uses a paper material with a very thin layer of plant-based bioplastic, all from responsible sources. Each packet can then be cut up and added to the food waste or compost bin.
“It will decompose into biomass under ambient conditions within 14 weeks, as opposed to regular plastic bottles that live on for more than 500 years in our ecosystem,” said Spruce founder Mahira Kalim.
In addition, whilst the mass use of plastic presents a significant environmental hazard, it can also have adverse health effects, from the consumption of micro and nano-plastics. Kalim started Spruce after health issues forced her to search for an alternative to chemical home cleaning products.
Spruce is currently live on Kickstarter.
