My-Blades is engaging in a variety of sustainable practices, including using recycled steel and planting a tree for every razor sold
Spotted: As we have seen, an increasing number of products are incorporating sustainability into their design. One of the latest is a new razor blade made by Berlin startup My-Blades. The blades are made from recycled material and incorporate a number of novel features to improve safety and the closeness of the shave.
Razor blades are made from stainless steel, the main component of which is iron. Because the mining and refining of iron are very energy-intensive, using recycled steel in razor blades could save a great deal of energy. My-Blades not only uses recycled steel in their blades, but they also coat them with a ‘Teflon Platinum’ coating to ensure a smooth shave and reduce razor burns.
My-Blades has also developed a 2-in-1 shaving head that combines the features of an open and closed comb razor, allowing the same head to be used for both daily shaves and for trimming longer hair, and saving the need to buy two heads. The sides of the razor are also designed to cover the corner of the blades, adding further protection from nicks. Perhaps best of all, however, is that My-Blades has teamed up with Eden Reforestation Projects to plant a tree for every product they sell.
The company website states: “Style and performance don’t need to compromise on sustainability. We aim to be the most sustainable shaving company, producing premium shaving accessories and the most sustainable razor blades in the market.” The company also points out that they have taken the opportunity, “to remove plastic from our packaging where possible … all the plastic used in our products has either been 100% recycled or will be compensated by taking the equivalent amount of plastic we used out of the ocean to maintain a healthy ecosystem.”
Perhaps because of the huge number of razors sold each year, we have actually seen a few innovations aimed at improving the sustainability or usability of razors. These have included a disposable razor made from paper and a shaving kit designed around the needs of black consumers.
