A carbon neutral NFT network supports social and environmental initiatives

The network will feature an NFT series from Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke to raise funds for people affected by brain injury

Spotted: Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) utilise blockchain technology to certify ownership of a digital or physical asset. In recent years they have been used to represent assets such as real estate, artwork, and even internet memes. NFTs are ideal vehicles to digitally represent assets, but they have traditionally had a large carbon footprint due to the energy intensity of the computer functions used to ‘mine’ them.

Now, decentralised public network SEVA.LOVE has announced that it will be collaborating with carbon offsetting market DOVU to facilitate NFT releases that are linked to social and environmental initiatives.

Together, the two companies will work towards offsetting the carbon footprint of SEVA.LOVE’s NFT collections. DOVU primarily offsets carbon by sequestering it in agricultural soil, which in turn improves the soil’s nutrition and grows more nutrient-rich food.

SEVA.LOVE is backed by InfiniteWorld’s NFT engine, which integrates the carbon negative Hedera distributed ledger network.

The partnership’s first series of NFTs was released by Game of Thrones star, Emilia Clarke. This raised funds for the actress’s SameYou charity. The charity, which was created after Clarke survived two life-threatening brain hemorrhages, supports survivors of Acquired Brain Injury (ABI). The auction included tokens for both digital and physical items, including the Atelier Versace dress that Emilia wore on the red carpet at the 68th Emmy Awards in 2016.

“Since NFTs took off earlier this year, concerns have (rightfully) been raised about their environmental impact,” explains Irfon Watkins, co-founder and CEO of DOVU. He continues, “We have the technology to not only push the boundaries of innovation, but to also protect the planet. We hope that more NFT creators, platforms, and companies will prioritise collaborating with energy-efficient blockchains and directly support carbon capture efforts so that, together, we can start healing the planet.”
