A global blockchain platform for business transparency

The World Economic Forum’s new blockchain-based Sustainability Map connects businesses of all sizes around the world

Spotted: As part of its Accelerating Sustainable Production programme, the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) blockchain-based Sustainability Map connects businesses of all sizes around the world. A four-way partnership between WEF, the International Trade Centre (ITC), the Lenzing Group and Everledger, the Sustainability Map is self-service. Businesses contribute what information they can, and as the user base grows, so too does the value of the map’s data.

The map is hosted by the International Trade Centre. As an entity of the United Nations, the ITC’s servers are securely protected and thus contributors can be assured of the neutrality and safety of the platform. Many companies have turned to blockchain as a means of authenticating transactions and providing traceability for customers eager to better understand the provenance of products. This platform provides the first method for connecting businesses at all stages of a product’s lifespan and creating a global overview.

WEF is currently seeking additional suppliers and brands to join Asia Pacific Rayon (APR), EVRYTHNG and PlataformaVerde in contributing to the second stage of the pilot programme.

As well as verifying individual products, such as olive oil, Springwise has spotted blockchain being used for increased sustainability in online shopping, via smart packaging.
