Bioceramic domes pave the way to sustainable construction

The Geoship microfactory and village building platform offers a new model for the regenerative future

Spotted: Hidden in the California Mountains is a new kind of affordable ‘dome home’. Made from bioceramics, the domes are zero-carbon, fireproof, and biologically resonant. This the company’s first dome prototype, and paves the way for further development.

Springwise first spotted Geoship back in 2019, creating high-quality homes for low income people in Las Vegas.  Two years later, the company has launched a new round of equity crowdfunding available to global citizens at startengine.com/geoship

The prototype is part of Geoship’s efforts to create a microfactory and village building platform that could manufacture thousands of homes annually. People can now pre-order the homes, and the company claims 30,000 interested customers.

“We need more than new technologies to protect the planet, we need a new paradigm of community living in harmony with the natural world.” said Morgan Bierschenk Geoship Co-Founder and CEO.

Similar to concrete, the benefits of bioceramic stem from its ability to be mixed into a slurry and poured into a mold without using high heat. Unlike cement, which is a big carbon emitter, bioceramics are obtained from wastewater. This not only makes it economical, but also much more sustainable to manufacture. The company also said that it is much stronger than concrete. 

Geoship has already raised over $1.5 million (around €1.24 million) of investment from more than two thousand investors, 30,000 interested customers and 400 paid deposits. Between 2020 and 2021, Geoship began pilot manufacturing and is planning a factory capable of manufacturing thousands of homes annually.

Other recent architecture innovations spotted by Springwise include lego-like stackable homes, and a vertical forest in China.
