Honolulu, Hawaii, plans to use the new concrete, developed by Carbon Cure, in all future infrastructure projects
Spotted: Canadian startup Carbon Cure has found a way to replace some of the cement mix used in concrete with C02. The C02 can be sourced from industrial facilities, potentially reducing air pollution.
The process involves turning C02 into a mineral that can be injected into the concrete. With the available technology from Carbon Cure, Honolulu’s city council has passed a resolution to use C02 injected concrete in all future infrastructure projects. Hawaii is the first US state committed to a 100 percent renewable energy by 2045.
“Cement, the critical ingredient that gives concrete its strength, is responsible for up to seven percent of the world’s carbon dioxide (C02) emissions,” the city council stated in its resolution.
