Carbon offsetting platform provides fully traceable contributions

Independently verified projects help offset the carbon emissions of both businesses and individuals

Spotted: New Zealand technology company CarbonClick recently introduced its e-commerce platform for businesses. Rather than require every business to research, build and track its own carbon offsetting programme, CarbonClick provides high-quality, internationally-vetted and fully traceable projects that support the work to reverse climate change. Businesses add a CarbonClick option to their checkout processes, allowing customers to decide how much of their purchases to offset. Individuals can set up a monthly subscription to cover the cost of the carbon emissions of their regular activities.

Each contribution made via CarbonClick is split in half between a local forest regeneration or conservation project and an international clean energy one. For purchases made where there are no nearby carbon offsetting projects, the contribution is allocated entirely to an international programme. CarbonClick takes 20 per cent of each payment and negotiates volume discounts with its partner organisations. Currently, 460 businesses are using CarbonClick, and the company is working towards a goal of drawing down 100,000 tonnes of carbon in the next year.

New Zealand shoppers contribute to projects certified by the Permanent Forest Sink Initiative. All other carbon offsetting projects supported by CarbonClick meet independently verified standards that include those of Plan Vivo, Verra, Gold Standard and the United Nations.

From diamonds to roof tiles, a range of innovations spotted by Springwise are seeking to reduce carbon emissions in every aspect of daily life.
