Climate tool connects digital checkouts to carbon offsetting

The software tool makes it easy to integrate climate solutions into any customer experience

Spotted: Norwegian climate-tech company CHOOOSE has developed an API-driven climate tool that automatically calculates the carbon footprint of any consumer offering.

CHOOOSE Connect also allows customers to compensate for the carbon footprint of their purchases. The company says it is driven by wanting to make climate action part of everyday life and business.

Emissions offsetting schemes have become increasingly popular, however, they require adequate measurements to be taken with detailed data collection – which CHOOOSE’s tool hopes to provide.

The solution supports a broad range of carbon calculations, from travel and shipping, to finance and people. Once the carbon footprint has been calculated, partners have the flexibility to select a climate solution – these include renewable energy, nature-based solutions, and sustainable aviation fuels. The tools provided by CHOOOSE also let customers to track and learn about the projects they support after their purchase.

Although not limited to the travel sector, the solution has been used by travellers in over 70 countries. And a number of leading travel firms are already using the technology to help travellers address their carbon footprint. Among these are Skyscanner, Lonely Planet, Wizz Air, Norwegian, and Heathrow Airport. The tool takes into account the actual vessel type of fuel, travel distance, loading capacity, and air cargo.

With support from CHOOOSE, Norwegian Air has become the first airline to be approved by the United Nation’s ‘Climate Neutral Now’ initiative. Norwegian customers can now compensate for the carbon emissions from flying during the ticket checkout process.

Other recent offsetting solutions spotted by Springwise include a green mobile plan that lets users offset the emissions caused by their phone, and a zero-waste online store that provides the option to offset emissions from shipping purchases.
