Hybrid parks boost the clean energy roll-out

The projects make it easier for businesses to switch to clean power

Spotted: Diversifying energy supplies is a challenge faced by almost every country. In the EU, for instance, despite efforts to reduce reliance on Russian gas imports, the region’s volume of imports increased from September 2022 to May 2024. One way to reduce dependence is to make domestic renewable energy more accessible, which is exactly what Estonia-based Sunly hopes to do.

The company sells electricity directly to consumers, provides consultancy on renewable energy options, and designs, project manages, and constructs hybrid energy parks for clients. These hybrid parks co-locate wind turbines, solar panels, and energy storage for cost-effective, reliable power at a single connection point.

Landowners work with Sunly to turn unused space into renewable energy farms and the company manages maintenance of the space for 30 years. For businesses and individuals interested in switching to green energy, Sunly provides a range of options. Its hybrid electricity packages are tailored to the consumer and consist of a mix of fixed-price solar and wind energy, and market-price renewable grid electricity. This means customers can buy green energy from Sunly, rather than having to situate renewable energy generation plants on their own site.

The company works across the Baltic states and Poland and currently has 227 megawatts of energy production in operation, including 2.3 megawatts of solar power and storage capacity. Sunly recently raised €300 million to construct 1.3 gigawatts of renewable energy sources. The funding will finance additional hybrid, storage, solar, and wind parks in Estonia, Latvia, and Poland.
