Next-generation electrolysers for green hydrogen

A containerised system can deliver green hydrogen cheaper and more efficiently than existing plants

Spotted: Hydrogen is considered by many to be the most efficient way to store renewable energy. Yet it has a problem – most hydrogen is currently produced using energy derived from fossil fuels, making it unsustainable. Startup Oort Energy has a solution for this with its next-generation hydrogen electrolyser that can produce green hydrogen efficiently.

Oort has developed a more efficient type of polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyser – the technology used to produce hydrogen gas. The company claims that its proprietary technology can significantly drive down the production costs of green hydrogen.

The company’s products produce clean hydrogen gas from water and renewable electricity. Oort has already completed the design of a 250-kilowatt platform and is preparing for mass manufacture. To this end, it has recently closed an oversubscribed £5 million (around €5.85 million) seed funding round led by Energy Revolution Ventures, an early-stage electrochemistry specialist investor.

The funding will be used to build the company’s first manufacturing facility. Oort has also brought in a strategic investor to assist with the supply chain and scaling up the manufacturing process. The company expects to deliver its first containerised system later this year.

As the world moves towards net zero, hydrogen storage is poised to play a major role. It has been getting a boost from recent advances featured in the Springwise archive, like research into ways to make electrolysis more efficient and a method to produce clean hydrogen from air.
