WiTricity is set to provide wireless charging for autonomous e-buses to make the most advanced public transport system in the world
Spotted: Road transport accounts for 16 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, making electric vehicles (EVs) vital. Hoping to accelerate the adoption of EVs is Massachusetts-based WiTricity, the leader in wireless EV charging. The startup plans to do this by eliminating the nuisance of plug-in charging. The startup has recently partnered with the top bus brand in China, Yutong Bus, to provide wireless charging for its autonomous e-buses.
By removing the need to plug in, WiTricity Halo chargers ease the charging experience for EVs. And it is in transit applications where this technology is especially significant because heavy and awkward cords and cables can contribute to slips and falls among workers. This makes the technology essential to keep these vehicles on the roads.
Discussing the potential impact of this innovation Alex Gruzen, the CEO of WiTricity, says: “We are so excited to see this first real demonstration with Yutong Bus of wireless charging powering autonomy at scale. As autonomy progresses, the logistics of charging and servicing will become even more critical. WiTricity wireless EV charging can enable the next generation of electrified transportation and logistics.”
The commercial distribution of wireless charging in Yutong’s e-buses is set to launch in Zhengzhou, China, on the Xiayo 2.0 autonomous minibus, which seats 10 people and has a range of 150 kilometres.
Springwise has previously spotted other innovations that wirelessly charge e-vehicles, including a technology that charges EVs as they travel and a wireless charging pad for e-scooters.
