A recyclable paper-based alternative to bubble wrap

An Indian startup is marketing a novel paper packaging and filler material as a replacement for plastic

Spotted: While nothing beats the relaxation of a few minutes spent popping bubble wrap, the fossil-fuel-based plastic is not sustainable as a packaging material. And because most bubble wrap isn’t recyclable, it ends up in landfill, where it takes hundreds of years to decompose. Indian company EcoCushion Paper is hoping to make a difference with its plastic-free packaging.

EcoCushion’s packaging material is made from kraft paper that has been cut so that it creates a honeycomb design once it is pulled. The resulting 3D hexagonal shape provides strong support and cushioning to objects wrapped in it. As well as being 100 per cent recyclable and compostable, the paper packaging takes up around 80 per cent less space than bubble wrap – saving energy during shipping.

Because the wrap’s hexagonal cells interlock among themselves, most objects can be securely wrapped without the need for plastic tape. The wrap is also designed with continuous perforations, allowing it to be shortened to any length without scissors.

As the dangers of plastic become more evident, innovators are stepping in to develop alternatives. Springwise has spotted many products and ideas that are working to rid us of the need for plastic. These include everything from eliminating the plastic lids on coffee cups, to food containers made from food waste and a packing insulation made from feathers.
