Modular playing field brings sport to any community

Dutch company TenCate created the Field in a box to allow communities of all levels of wealth to provide turf playing fields for a variety of local sports.

Building on the sense of belonging that sport brings to many communities, Dutch chemical and material technology company TenCate created the Field in a box. Modular, and built using locally available materials, the playing field is designed to accommodate a range of sports, including cricket, football and hockey.

Delivered in a shipping container that itself is meant for conversion into a community center, the Field in a box includes a shock absorbing layer, LED lighting for day and night use, fencing and a durable synthetic turf. Communities can also choose to set up a green source module that collects waste water and purifies it for further use in sanitation, irrigation and even as drinking water.

Using play to make learning fun is a common and effective way to help get children more involved, as is combining tech with physical activity. Lego-style blocks help children learn to code, and a new tablet allows kids to play games while trampolining. How else could play be used to empower communities?
