Ports of Stockholm installs hydrogen fuelling station

The investment in hydrogen is a step towards the organisation’s goal of entirely fossil fuel-free operations by 2030

Spotted: As part of its commitment to eliminate emissions and protect the environment, Ports of Stockholm is taking an important step towards its goal of fossil-fuel-free trucking operations by 2025. The port authority is beginning a procurement process for a hydrogen fuelling station, which will be used to refuel the work vehicles at Stockholm Norvik Port.

Hydrogen fuel is a key part of achieving the organisation’s environmental targets, and the procurement will cover delivery of the station as well as a distribution agreement for hydrogen.

Hydrogen fuel cells offer a number of advantages over traditional combustion engines, including increased efficiency and lower emissions. In addition, hydrogen can be produced from renewable sources such as wind and solar power, making it a sustainable option for powering port operations. The fuelling station will be used to power a variety of port vehicles, including forklifts, trucks, and buses. With this investment, Ports of Stockholm is positioning itself as a leader in the shift to clean maritime operations.

The agreement is expected to be in place no later than January 2023, and the investment in hydrogen is part of achieving Ports of Stockholm’s environmental goal of entirely fossil-fuel-free operations by 2030.

Other hydrogen storage and transportation innovations spotted by Springwise include transporting green hydrogen in powder form, a project testing whether hydrogen can be transported through natural gas pipelines, and a green hydrogen island.
