Recycling company pivots to face shields to save jobs

A Tanzanian business transitioned from paper to plastic and now produces thousands of face shields made from recycled plastic

Spotted: When the cardboard recycling and paper export business dried up, with borders closing around the world, Tanzania’s Zaidi Recyclers quickly created a new stream of work. Located in the port city of Dar es Salaam, the company had a thriving paper export business. Much of its recycled cardboard and other paper waste was sent to China and India. Once quarantines came into effect, company CEO Allen Kimambo had to act quickly to keep the company’s employees in work.

Swiftly transitioning to plastic recycling, the company utilised its networks, processes and the infrastructure that was already in place. Additional safety measures, such as providing transport to and from the workplace, were adopted to ensure workers’ safety. The company now produces thousands of face shields made from recycled plastic and supplies hospitals and other healthcare centres across the country.

Face shields and masks are increasingly becoming a part of everyday life. A variety of innovations are working to meet the mix of demand from healthcare professionals and the general public. Springwise recently spotted an inflatable face shield that allows wearers to eat and drink, and a travel jumpsuit with a hood that fits over face masks for safe travel on public transport.
