Expandable water carrier for use in developing nations

The CellBag is a portable carrier that can be expanded to transport varying quantities of water or other drinks.

Hard on the heels of our story about the WaterWear backpack comes word of another like-minded innovation. Originating this time from France and Paris-based Lab Store, the CellBag is a portable carrier that can be expanded to transport varying quantities of water or other drinks.

Priced at EUR 75 with free shipping within France, the first edition of the CellBag is tailored for urban life, Lab Store says. Designed by Mathieu Lehanneur and David Edwards and available in four colors, the limited-edition, one-liter carrier is “great for trekking, camping, sports events, travel – or just bringing a lunch or snack to work or school,” the company explains. Perhaps even more interesting, however, is the bag’s broader social potential. Not only are all profits from sales of the CellBag contributed to the Earth Water Foundation and to a humanitarian initiative in South Africa, but the bags themselves can be greatly expanded for use in areas where people must fetch and carry their own water each day. The video below depicts the CellBag in action:

Women around the globe spend 200 million hours a day collecting water, according to Water.org. Social entrepreneurs: How could you get involved in lightening that burden?
