AI tackles the menstrual health gap

The app helps those with periods optimise their work productivity

Spotted: Even though periods are a normal biological function, the impacts aren’t widely spoken about, particularly when it comes to the working world. As well as physical discomfort, menstruation can also cause dips in energy levels, mood, and concentration, and according to one study, these symptoms result in almost nine days of productivity being lost every year due to presenteeism – where employees feel compelled to be in the office, even when they aren’t well. Now, one platform wants to change this.

Essence is an AI-powered, cycle-tracking app that’s designed to help women and people who menstruate manage their tasks and stress in a way that maximises productivity. Unlike traditional period trackers, which focus on family planning and fertility, Essence emphasises the connection between productivity, menstrual health, and mental health. Tracking cycles with this in mind means Essence can help users optimise their menstrual well-being in the corporate world and boost professional growth.

The all-in-one platform combines a to-do list, habit tracker, period tracker, and mindfulness app and users can align their work schedules, exercise, and diet depending on what stage of the menstrual cycle they are in. For instance, according to Essence, the luteal phase is the best time to finish projects and reflect, whereas it’s best to rest and be more introspective when menstruating. Difficult tasks and learning new things are best suited to the follicular phase and speaking or networking events will likely be most productive during ovulation.

With its platform, Essence hopes to redefine the future of work for women and those who menstruate, by helping to bring work schedules more in line with the 28-day hormonal cycle. Head of Communications at Essence Hannah Wilson told Springwise that doing this “will help foster an equitable corporate culture and enhance the well-being and performance of menstruating employees.” Essence is looking for more forward-thinking companies to join the app and participate in the company’s quarterly menstrual health masterclasses.
