Hourly insights into grid emissions to cut carbon

Agriculture & Energy

The granular, grid carbon data is available to businesses through an API

Spotted: Today, the power grid is something of a black box, with businesses traditionally unable to fully understand how the power they purchase translates into greenhouse gas emissions. This is due to a lack of location- and time-specific data.

Startup Singularity Energy, which was developed by experts at Harvard, MIT, and Johns Hopkins, is working to change this with its validated, hourly grid emissions data layer and business decarbonisation tools.

The organisation’s Open Grid Emissions dataset (OGE), which is open source and free to use, provides insight into the emissions caused by the grid in a particular location at a particular time. The platform’s machine learning capability further makes it possible to predict the impact of future changes, whether those be reductions in energy use or decarbonisation measures.

The methods the company developed to create the OGE platform have been peer-reviewed in an academic journal, and the base data comes from the United States’ Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) annual eGRID emissions analysis. On top of that, Singularity Energy adds hourly measurements and monthly reports of emissions to create detailed records of grid power, greenhouse gas generation, and volumes of air pollution.

The data and predictions are available via an API for integration into other applications, and the company also provides tools such as actionable decarbonisation insights and automated decision-making.

It can be tricky for businesses to know where to start when it comes to making carbon savings. Fortunately, there a lots of innovations out there looking to help. Springwise has also spotted the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to decarbonise energy-intensive industries and software to cut emissions across the supply chain.
