Teachers set lesson plans that the AI personalises for each student's needs

Spotted: UNESCO’s first Global Report on Teachers highlighted that the world faces a “critical shortage of teachers”, which could put achieving SDG 4 and the Education 2030 agenda at risk. At the same time, use of ChatGPT among students has skyrocketed, often to avoid doing tasks themselves, which compromises their learning development in the long term. Flint, instead, wants to use AI to support teachers so students can learn effectively.

Sohan Choudhury, co-founder and CEO of Flint, an AI-led personalised learning platform for use in classrooms, told Springwise that both co-founders “strongly felt that AI could be used for good in education, but that teachers needed tools built around their needs.” Flint provides that custom teaching support.

Teachers shape the Flint AI into the teaching assistant they need, which includes choosing from among the more than 50 available languages, specifying the reading level of students, and setting rules for the AI to follow. Teachers then set an objective for a subject or lesson, upload relevant class materials, and choose assignments for the students to complete.

The AI is set to guide students in the correct direction while not revealing answers, and administrators and teachers can review student interaction with the platform live or as a downloadable PDF. As the student’s skills and knowledge develop, the AI follows, tailoring content and guidance to the individual’s level, making it an ideal extra means of support for neurodiverse students. Flint does not train its AI on student chat data and does not require a phone number for students to use.

Schools or school districts sign up via subscription with fees based on the number of users. Choudhury explained: “We’re excited to be launching a free tier, which will allow individual teachers to sign up for Flint and use the platform with their students. Over time, we also hope to make the types of interactions that students can have on the Flint platform much more interactive.”
