A compact defibrillator for home use

Health & Wellbeing

This potentially life-saving defibrillator is designed to be used by anyone and without the need for any prior training

Spotted: Using a defibrillator in conjunction with CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) following a cardiac arrest increases chances of survival to 74 per cent, compared to just six per cent when using CPR alone. In these emergency situations, immediate treatment can be the difference between life and death. The problem is, apart from certain public locations, defibrillators are generally only available in hospitals. To improve access to this life-saving technology, French startup Lifeaz has developed a home defibrillator that almost anyone can use.

One issue with existing home defibrillators is that they require specialised training to use correctly. Lifeaz has instead created a defibrillator that guides the user every step of the way, and automatically decides the therapy to deliver. It is also compact and lightweight, allowing it to be installed almost anywhere in the home, or even carried in a backpack.

The defibrillator is always connected to the company’s systems, and automation ensures the device is in working order at all times. Lifaez continuously supervises the status of the defibrillators and will send an alert if maintenance is needed, or components need replacing.

Johann Kalchman, CEO and co-founder of Lifeaz, explains: “Our goal is to democratise defibrillators and raise awareness of first aid gestures. Indeed, witnesses of cardiac arrest often find themselves helpless or not prepared enough to intervene in due time!”

The availability of consumer medical devices is increasing rapidly, improving access to medical care and treatment for millions. Some recent innovations in this space that Springwise has spotted include a non-invasive method for detecting malaria using a smartphone, and a toilet seat that can detect kidney disease, diabetes, and UTIs.
