Battery packs for heavy-duty equipment

Mobility & Transport

The tech could be used for machinery in construction, farming, and more

Spotted: As the use of electric vehicles grows, there is a growing need for batteries capable of running heavy machinery and equipment in all conditions. Working to meet this challenge is Wattalps, which has developed a new type of lithium-ion battery technology that can handle tough, off-road workloads and conditions.

Wattalps’ system is comprised of three modules, which can be freely combined to create configurations to suit many types of vehicles and uses. The system includes lithium batteries in either a long-life, high-energy or high-power version. There is also a battery junction box that acts as the central control unit and includes power connections, communication, and safety control. It can be configured for either low- or high-voltage applications.

The key to the system is the thermal regulation component, which controls and optimises battery temperature to improve safety and performance. This component involves heating and cooling sub-systems and can be configured for different climate conditions. This cooling infrastructure enables the company’s batteries to charge faster, deliver higher power, and work under a wider range of temperatures than comparable models, making them ideal for heavy-duty and demanding applications, including in construction and farming equipment.

By combining these modular units in different configurations, the system can be used to provide power for a very wide range of uses, including building mobile power stations, converting internal combustion engine vehicles into fully electric ones, or easily designing new fully electric vehicles.

Wattlaps has recently completed a €11 million series A funding round with support from new investors, past supporters, and banks. The funding will be used to increase Wattalps’ manufacturing capacity, extend the product range, and expand commercial coverage.
