Fuelling change for maritime and aviation workers

A behaviour change platform helps crews make more sustainable decisions at work
Spotted: Many companies want to reduce their day-to-day emissions, but it can be difficult for employees to understand the best way to do this. Startup Signol was founded to change this, with a focus on helping companies in emissions-intensive industries.
The company is largely focused on the aviation and maritime shipping industries, where its data and behavioural science-based platform helps to make it easy for crew members to act on opportunities to save fuel. The innovative solution motivates and engages employees to make more sustainable decisions in their daily tasks.
Signol’s platform analyses business data to learn key actions that crews can take to reduce fuel usage and incentivises the crew to take those actions, whether that’s by optimising fuel load or following the most efficient journey route. Managers can then view carbon reductions and analyse data to understand the actions driving the savings.
Each employee views a personalised dashboard, which contains their own individual goals and progress, as well as tailored rewards like workplace benefits and relevant charitable donations.
Signol claims that its platform helps everyone involved: businesses can better understand where waste comes from and how to manage it; employees are empowered to make more sustainable choices; and managers gain a deeper understanding of employee patterns to identify issues with craft, routes, and schedules before they become major problems.
Signol recently raised £2.5 million in a funding round led by New York-based venture capital firm TMV, with participation from industry stakeholders. The funding will be used to develop the platform further and enter the corporate travel sector.
