Innovation That Matters

Microwavable notebook files user's work in the cloud

Work & Lifestyle

Rocketbook is a traditional notebook which enables users to digitize their handwritten notes and drawings with one click.

This is part of a series of articles that looks at entrepreneurs hoping to get their ideas off the ground through crowdfunding. At the time of writing, each of these innovations is currently seeking funding.

Despite the convenience of digital solutions, lots of people simply work better, or feel more creative, using familiar tools. We have already seen the Equil Smartmarker, which enables users to retrofit their whiteboard materials so that their work can be easily streamed, shared and saved. Now, the Rocketbook is a combination of microwavable digital notebook and mobile app which enables users to digitize their handwritten notes and drawings, automatically archiving them in appropriate folders.

Rocketbook is an A4 size, cloud-intergrated notepad containing 50 dot-grid sheets. At the bottom of each page there are seven ‘buttons’ — these are icons which the user assigns to an online folder of their choice inside Dropbox, Evernote, Google Docs or within their email. To begin, the user makes notes, drawings or diagrams onto a sheet. They can do this with any traditional pen or a Pilot FriXion, one of which comes with each Rocketbook. If they choose the latter, they can later erase their workings by simply putting the device into a microwave oven. This feature means the book can be reused entirely up to 25 times. When the user wants to transfer their notes, they simply mark the icon which corresponds to the online folder they would like to send their page to. The Rocketbook app then scans the page through the user’s smartphone camera, detects the marked icon, and files away the notes accordingly.

Rocketbook is currently crowdfunding on Indiegogo. The device has already surpassed its USD 20,000 goal ten times over with two weeks remaining. Are there other traditional work materials that could be digitized and updated?
