This AI platform makes it easier to track the impact of building materials

Spotted: To help reduce the impact of our built environment, which is currently responsible for 37 per cent of carbon emissions, Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are fast becoming a requirement. These comprehensive reports map the impact of building materials, from raw material extraction to disposal, and require a great deal of expertise, time, and money to conduct. Now, startup Emidat is automating the process using AI-powered software.

The platform analyses environmental data from over 200,000 materials in its database to find a relevant match for a user’s material. Then, the software provides a visual breakdown of the product’s environmental footprint, including global warming potential, water use, and embodied carbon. Users also receive smart suggestions to help them cut their environmental impact in a cost-effective way.

Emidat’s system integrates directly with existing manufacturer systems, providing manufacturers with a transparent and flexible way to customise environmental data for specific customer requests. The company’s platform also uses natural language input, making the system easier to operate and ensuring that manufacturers can comply with international regulatory standards.

To speed up EPD generation, Emidat’s software is pre-verified, so there’s no additional cost or time delay when creating new EPDs. Users select their desired publishing partner from Emidat’s list of verification partners depending on their target audience, and the final EPD is ready to be shared in a few clicks. According to Emidat, manufacturers who generate as few as three EPDs per year will save money with its software.
