With the words of women having been too often scarce or shouted down, the platform aims to reintegrate women's stories back into the narrative, while focusing on how female storytellers have explored social issues and created social change
Spotted: Frame of Mind is an online storytelling platform for female and under-represented filmmakers, photographers and writers. The platform aims to spotlight the storytellers shaping our understanding of the most defining social issues of our time.
The platform is the child of London-based documentary photographer, film-maker and activist for gender and climate justice, Alice Aedy. With powerful filmmaking and photojournalism from the frontlines of the refugee crisis, Aedy’s work has given a voice to migrants in Serbia, France, Greece, Iran and Syria.
The focus will be on how female storytellers have explored social issues and created social change. Aedy shared a shocking fact that it is estimated only 0.5 per cent of recorded history includes stories by women.
“Through my work for gender and climate justice, I had been confronted with the power of storytelling; stories bring order to the chaos of life. I think young people are keener than ever to understand the world. Journalism is so important (and less trusted). Part of my mission with Frame of Mind is to celebrate good, trustworthy, fact-checked, visual journalism,” says Aedy.
A key strand of the platform is “DocClub”, where she shares her favourite films on a weekly basis with the goal being to highlight incredible documentaries and the filmmakers behind them.
In light of recent conversations around women’s experiences of sexual violence, the latest DocClub features “On Her Shoulders”, by Director Alexandria Bombach. The film follows the story of Yazidi human rights activist Nadia Murad, who was awarded the 2018 Nobel peace prize, in the years following her captivity by ISIS.
