Platform enables any store to convert to self-checkout

Scandit’s platform allows stores to develop apps that allow customers to scan products with their smartphones and pay directly in the app

Spotted: We are all familiar with bar codes, a technology that was first patented around 48 years ago and has since become ubiquitous. Most barcode scanners, like those used in stores, require an investment in specialised hardware and maintenance. However, Swiss startup Scandit has developed a platform that offers barcode scanning, optical character recognition, object recognition, and augmented reality for use on any camera-equipped smart device.

Scandit’s platform allows stores to develop apps that allow customers to scan products with their smartphones and pay directly in the app. Stores like Co-op Denmark are already using the platform with customers, who can now shop without needing to interact with a sales associate.

The technology is not only for customers. It can also be used by employees to complete tasks such as order picking, shelf management and price marking using phones, iPads or other devices. On top of this, the technology works on any mobile device outfitted with a camera, allowing new versatility for drones, wearables and robots.

According to Scandit, in addition to self-checkout, inventory management, proof of delivery and asset tracking, there is the ability to “use cases in healthcare include tracking patients, medication, specimens and supplies.” The company adds that the software is designed for, “enterprise-grade use with market-leading scan speeds and accuracy and is scalable to support large implementations.”

Self-checkout apps and platforms have seen huge growth recently, with innovations such as smart carts and automatic product recognition. However, Scandit’s platform could raise this to a new level by allowing almost any store to easily and cheaply transition to self-checkout, with no special hardware required.
