“Rejecting the dogma of shareholder primacy is not a question of bleeding hearts, it is a matter of enlightened self-interest. That holds for investors too.” – Financial Times Editorial Board
Perspectives are changing and mindsets are shifting: the 2020s will be defined by the climate crisis, a backlash against increasing wealth inequality and big tech dominance – combined with a demographic disruption that puts Millennials and Gen Z in charge. Is this a world where capitalism for profit is out, and profit for purpose is in?
The world is awakening to massive perception changes about the power and purpose of capital. Sustainability must become a core strategic priority and consumers now expect businesses to exercise ethical practices at every step of the value chain. Conscious capitalism is surging, but what does this mean for corporations and capital investment? How will it affect the behaviours of those who occupy the C-suite? And will it change the way businesses are held to account by customers, regulators, government and the public?
In a decade where corporations must consider stakeholders as well as shareholders, what will a reset of capitalism look like? In this, the fifth in our series of Springwise Sessions at the Club at the Ivy, Sophie Bidwell will chair a panel of experts to debate the issues and identify not only how the mindset of the market is changing, but how the valuation of a business is likely to evolve – diving into the very heart of capitalism itself.
