278-foot building made entirely of wood reduces carbon footprint

3XN and IttenBrechbül are taking an eco-friendly route in designing a new tower on the outskirts of Lausanne in Switzerland

Spotted: Following an international competition, Danish architectural firm 3XN and Swiss general planners IttenBrechbül have been appointed to design a 278-foot-tall wooden building made out of wood. Tilia Tower will be located on the outskirts of Lausanne in Switzerland and will consist of apartments, a hotel, retail and other hospitality venues such as bars, restaurants and cafés. The ambitious project brings life to the neighbourhood and will be a key player in the development of the area. The building will also feature a unique three-dimensional textured design that appears as though angular boxes are stacked all around each other.

The purpose of the visually stunning exterior is also practical, as the visible niches are windows and terraces, which aim to bring those living and working in the tower closer to nature and create built-in shade. Wood was also chosen as the construction material, as it provides a more optimal indoor climate and significantly reduces carbon emissions. Furthermore, the development will include a public square in the front of the tower that will be filled with biodiverse plants and microorganisms, to enhance the overall focus of the building on sustainability and nature.

Springwise has recently spotted other innovations using wood as a sustainable building material, including a carbon-negative building in Denmark, and an innovatively designed mobility scooter.
