App translates cinema audio into any language

MyLINGO lets cinemagoers listen to foreign language audio dubs of new movie releases privately through their smartphone.

We’ve already seen how second-screen devices can be utilized to display real-time text translations for any TV program through the Easy Way Subtitles app, but when it comes to the cinema it’s much harder to cater for individual viewers. However, a new app called MyLINGO now lets cinemagoers listen to foreign language audio dubs of new movie releases privately through their smartphone.

Users first download the app from the App Store and Google Play, which they can then use to browse the titles currently in theaters in the US. Before they head to the cinema, users find the film they’re about to see and download the audio track for their language. Most mainstream releases record these dubs for showings outside of the US, but they’re not typically available for foreign-language citizens visiting cinemas the US. At the start of each film, users plug in their headphones and press the ‘GO’ button in the app to sync the audio perfectly to the film. Each audio track costs a small amount to download, and is deleted once the movie is over.

MyLINGO opens up the cinema experience to US citizens and visitors who have a hard time understanding English. Are there other ways to leverage smartphones to provide extra content for viewers, making movie watching a more pleasurable experience?
