For the bedridden and wheelchair-bound, electric underwear helps prevent bed sores

Smart-e-Pants underwear combats the problem of bed sores by sending a mild electrical current to the wearer's backside every 10 minutes.

For those who are bedridden or wheelchair-bound, bed sores — also known as pressure ulcers — can be a serious health problem. Recently, however, a Canadian team of researchers have come up with a solution: Smart-e-Pants, electric underwear that combats the problem by sending a mild electrical current to the wearer’s backside every 10 minutes. Pressure ulcers arise due to there being a lack of oxygen and movement stimulating muscles and blood flow, so Smart-e-Pants intervene by simulating such movement artificially. Specifically, the undergarments include embedded electrodes that deliver a painless electrical current for 10 seconds every 10 minutes, essentially replicating how able-bodied people make miniscule movements when they sit or lie down, thus keeping blood flowing to their tissues. Developed with CAD 5 million in funding from Alberta Innovates – Health Solutions (AIHS), including support from Alberta Health and Wellness, Smart-e-Pants have been successfully pilot-tested, and more extensive testing is now under way.
