Countertop charges smartphones wirelessly

Homeowners installing the DuPont Corian countertop in their properties will be able to charge their phone by simply resting it on the surface.

Given the ubiquity of smartphones in today’s society, it’s no wonder we’ve seen many innovative ways to charge the devices, such as the Epiphany onE Puck that enables users to charge their phone with a hot drink. Now homeowners installing the DuPont Corian countertop in their properties will be able to charge their phone by simply resting it on the surface.

The Duracell Powermat has already demonstrated the possibility of wireless charging, which uses electromagnetic induction to transfer energy from a charging station. DuPont has now teamed up with the Power Matters Alliance to integrate the technology into its work surfaces. Suitable for both commercial and residential application, the Corian countertop is a solid synthetic surface with the feel of granite that has technology similar to the Powermat embedded inside. When coupled with Duracell’s AccessCase smartphone cover, users can simply place their handset down on the surface and it will begin to charge.

The worktop integrates smartphone charging more seamlessly into everyday living, meaning that consumers don’t even have to think about topping up their battery. Could this become a standard for commercial and home furnishings, enabling wireless charging almost anywhere?
