AllGo hotel rooms are a partnership between architecture firm Ryder and accessible bathroom design company Motion Spot and will be available internationally.
Frustrated by the lack of beauty in buildings for people with disabilities, accessible design experts Motion Spot partnered with UK architects Ryder to create AllGo hotel rooms. The AllGo rooms can be customized for each inhabitant and contain a number of integrated essentials. Focus group participants and the design team say that the best part of the new style of hotel room is that the space is beautiful. Others agree, with the AllGo concept winning the Celia Thomas prize in the 2016 Bespoke Access Awards competition.
The concept and design were influenced by focus groups held with people with a wide range of disabilities. Participants noted that current hotel rooms designated as accessible are larger than typical rooms yet feel much less homey and often feel clinical in design. AllGo rooms are the same size, regardless of who will be staying there. Prior to check-in, the room can be adapted to meet an individual’s needs. The design is flexible and includes features such as an integrated track hoist in the ceiling; a concealed handrail; and wall panels that transform into seating and storage. The AllGo team plans to begin piloting the design internationally within a year.
Other recent accessibility Springspottings include a crowd-sourced world map with ratings and information about entryways and restrooms, and an online platform that lists accommodation and aids for travelers needing extra mobility assistance. What other services need an accessibility upgrade?
