DIY hack turns sneakers into weather reporters

The Converse Beacon is a hack by Chapter SF, which sees Chuck Taylor sneakers turned into weather reporters through a little DIY tinkering.

Converse’s Chuck Taylors have always provided blank canvases that encourage customization. Now, the shoemakers have launched a series of hacks in collaboration with various creative agencies to promote the brand. The latest of which is Converse Beacon, by Chapter SF, which sees the iconic sneakers turned into weather reporters through a little DIY tinkering.

The hack uses an Arduino board, Bluetooth, and a NeoPixel ring to create a lighting add-on that resembles the Chuck logo. The tech can be created using step-by-step instructions available on Hackster. Then, wearers can program their light to change color according to the weather using Adafruit and IFTTT. The shoes can be hacked to glow blue when it is going to rain, yellow for sunshine, and white when the surf is good.
