myGenome from Veritas Genetics can reveal entire genome sequences via a smartphone app, and is the first to offer it as a viable consumer product.
Many diseases can be more effectively treated or managed if diagnosed early. Genome sequencing can often help patients catch conditions earlier and DNA companies such as deCODEme and 23andme have enabled consumers to access some of this information, but now myGenome from Veritas Genetics can reveal entire genome sequences via a smartphone app for under USD 1000.
In the last 20 years, the price of genome sequencing has dropped from USD 3.7 billion in 2001 to USD 350,000 in 2007. But the relatively affordable myGenome is the first product to make entire genome sequencing a viable consumer product. To take part, users must request the process through their doctor. Included in the price are genetic counselling sessions to help the patient understand their results and advice on their possible actions going forward.
Genome sequences also reveal information about the patient’s lifestyle traits — such as their athleticism or vitamin deficiencies. User can access all their results through the app and sign up for counseling sessions and personalized genetic news. What other test results could be expanded through a smartphone app?
