Gymwear with built-in fitness tracking tech reaches pre-order launch

Now available for pre-order, Athos is a workout kit with embedded sensors that offer detailed and precise data about muscle growth and technique.

Consumers’ exercise regimes have been forever changed by fitness trackers such as Fitbit and Nike+ products, but these small devices don’t tell the whole story of what’s going on in different parts of the body during a workout. Now available for pre-order, Athos is a workout kit with embedded sensors that offer detailed and precise data about muscle growth and technique.

Rather than relying on extra accessories to track exercise data, Athos aims to replace gymgoers’ existing kit with its 100% machine-washable tech-laden tops and bottoms. Each item of gear includes a number of sensors points that use electromyography to monitor individual muscle activity, as well as a small removable ‘core’ device that wirelessly sends the data to wearers’ smartphones. As well as heart and breathing rate data, Athos gymwear also offers information about users’ individual muscle groups. Using the Athos app, those doing strength training can see which muscles they’re using as well as if they’re overexerting. For other exercises, the app can show users if they’re balancing correctly on their bike, achieving a good yoga posture, or need to work on their breathing while running. The video below explains more about the clothing range:

Athletes can pre-order any Athos item for USD 99, with the core costing USD 199. Will we start seeing similar wearable technology cater specifically for the demands of different sports in the near future?
