Marketplace helps patients find better healthcare abroad

Medigo is a Berlin-based company that helps users plan their medical tourism trips, with clinic reviews and information.

Thanks to the internet, more consumers are now aware of the healthcare choices available abroad, making medical tourism more popular now than it's ever been. While startups such as TraveDoc have focused more on helping tourists find doctors that speak their language in emergency situations, Medigo is a Berlin-based company that helps users plan their medical tourism trips, with clinic reviews and information.

Having just picked up EUR 5 million in funding from investors such as Accel and announcing plans to launch in the US and UK, the startup has already amassed numerous top quality clinics around Europe that deal with a huge range of healthcare needs. Users can search the site for their particular problem or procedure, whether it's dentistry, eye surgery, restricted drug treatments or even plastic surgery. They can also select the location they'd like to visit to bring up a list of the verified clinics in that region.

Each clinic profile shows the facility's accreditation, the procedures they excel at, the staff that work there, the languages they cater for and nearby amenities. Users can also compare treatment prices on the site. Once users have made their decision, they can contact the clinic through Medigo for free. If they go through with booking a procedure, the Medigo team provides 24/7 customer support to help patients throughout their journey.

Medical tourism is a result of consumers' increasing demand for services that suit them, driven by comparison services that help them get the best deal. Are there similar marketplaces for other industries that could encourage consumers to seek better deals elsewhere in the world?
