Mentor platform links applicants with current students for advice

Choosing the right courses at the right University in the right city can seem like a mammoth task. We have seen a number of platforms that aim to help prospective students navigate their options. One database, for example, only lists institutions that are financially viable to the searcher, while a peer-to-peer social network enables prospective students to gain application help from current students. Along a similar vein is StudentConnect, which matches applicants with student mentors who have similar majors, interests and ambitions, for advice sessions.

To begin, prospective students create an account, detailing which schools and majors they are applying for. Then, StudentConnect matches them with a mentor, who is currently studying at that institution. The pair can then connect via the secure platform for a 30-minute video chat, during which the applicant can ask any questions about the school, courses and admission process. Each advice session costs USD 25 and includes a 48-hour messaging window for follow up questions. StudentConnect has already recruited 200 student mentors from 50 different schools.
