Mobile app enables crowdsourced monitoring of local water sources

mWater is an app that allows those in the developing world to help keep tabs on local water sources.

Much the way Creek Watch lets citizens take part in monitoring the local watershed, so mWater allows those in the developing world to help keep tabs on local water sources. Now in beta, mWater is a free and open source Android app that’s designed to make it easy to identify water sources, check on water quality data, and add new test results. Users of the app can display local water sources as well as add new ones. Each time water gets tested they can also add the results and share information about a particular source, including whether or not it is currently working. Last but not least, mWater can be used to display a map of local water sources, color-coded based on their most recent test results. More than 3.4 million people die each year from water, sanitation, and hygiene-related causes, according to Water.org. Social entrepreneurs around the globe: one to get involved in?
