New lamp colour system helps indoor plants grow

To help indoor plants grow, a new lamp uses adjustable lighting technology for when plants are in vegetative and blooming stages.

Italian lighting company Artemide and Danish architecture and design company Bjarke Ingels Group have created the Gople lamp. The lamp is made from mouth-blown glass using traditional Venetian techniques. It’s also the first decorative lamp that uses Artemide’s patented RWB (red-white-blue) lighting technology which helps indoor plants grow. RWB is a different approach to coloured light which typically uses a RGB (red-green-blue) system.

The lights settings are adjustable. Users can choose colour settings that are good for plant growth such as blue and red coloured lights. While blue lights are good for plants in a vegetative state, red light is optimal for plants that have begun blooming. The light is also available in plain white light if users are not intending to use it for plants. The Gople lamp is a suspending lamp and it is available in three finishes – copper, silver and white. In particular, the lamp is ideal for people living in urban environments where outdoor spaces are fewer. It assists in sustaining plant life while also adding a decorative feature to an indoor space.

While the Gople lamp sustains plant life, another innovative lamp design from the Netherlands derives its power from living plants. This lamp consists of a plant in a glass tube and uses the photosynthetic process of the plant to harvest energy and create light. Another lighting solution from the Philippines is powered using salt water.
